We represented and promoted a diverse range of high quality design specialists
The Designers Formation was founded in 1989 as a co-operative agency especially for theatre designers. We saw it as our mission to support them to build viable and sustainable careers.
We are especially proud to have represented such a diverse range of high quality design specialists based in the UK working at local, national and international level.
Many of our designers over the years were actively involved in organisations representing the theatre design profession, including the Society of British Theatre Designers, Equity, and OISTAT. Their accumulated knowledge and expertise has made significant contributions to affecting change and building a network of support for the sector
We negotiated contracts and promoted professional conduct in line with the latest industry agreements
We fully consulted our designers when we negotiated on their behalf, and sought to uphold the best possible terms and conditions in a broad range of theatrical contexts.
Most importantly, The Designers Formation valued our designers’ personal taste and professional decisions
We supported our designers’ own work choices.
We listened and we asked questions, but we didn’t manage careers, or try to steer designers towards or away from particular areas of work.
We provided a supportive network for our designers to talk to us and to each other – to share ideas, and to discuss issues pertinent to a designer’s career.
We partnered to organise events and workshops, as well as supporting designers in getting their work seen and building new working relationships.
We were a socially aware and non-profit-making co-operative organisation
The Designers Formation was run by a committee made up of our represented designers, supported by a dynamic advisory panel of experienced theatre professionals who brought fresh and inspiring perspectives from associated professions and fields of interest.
As we draw the agency’s activities to a close in 2021, we know that collective, ethical models like this are more important than ever. We will continue to share our knowledge, skills and experience wherever we can to support our profession.
