Richard is a set and costume designer based in the UK. Having studied at RSAMD (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), he works throughout the UK and internationally designing drama, opera, musical theatre and dance. He has designed international, national and regional tours, repertory theatre and stand-alone productions. His work includes the West End premiere and subsequent international tour of Seussical and the UK tour of hit musical Avenue Q. His designs have been nominated for the Broadway World Awards (Addams Family, 2014) and the Off West End Awards (Merchant Of Venice, 2013). While studying, Richard was awarded the Dean Of Drama’s Julia Stewart Award.
Richard’s recent work includes Guess How Much I Love You (international tour), Outisde Mullingar (Vienna’s English Theatre), Bring On The Bollywood (UK Tour), Rossini’s Cinderella (Coventry Belgrade) as well as Little Red and The Wolf (Noisemaker and Dundee Rep Ensemble) which was nominated as best Children’s production at both the UK Theatre Awards 2016 and the Critics Award Theatre Scotland 2016.
Richard is Associate Designer to opera company High Time, for whom he has designed Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel as well as Cinderella in recent years. He also has a long-standing relationship with Sell A Door theatre company, including three years as Associate Designer, and has designed 10 productions for them since 2011.
Alongside his theatre work, Richard has also worked extensively in TV and Film, as a buyer, art director and set dresser, including BBC One series Justice, Moving On and Secrets and Words, the BAFTA-nominated Make A Musical and the first feature film of popular Horrible Histories franchise – Bill – for BBC Films.
